We of course aim high and want all our students to be in 100% of the time as we know there are strong correlations between this and achievement. Our minimum expectation is 96% and within the Attendance Policy you can see the interventions that are put in place if 96% is not met. The diagram below shows what 98% attendance means in terms of achievement.
There are a number of important steps that you can take to ensure your son/daughter maintains a high level of attendance:
- Ensure your son/daughter attends every day, on time, equipped and ready to learn. School starts at 08.35am.
- If your son/daughter is absent from the school, it is vital that a parent contacts the school at the earliest opportunity to provide a sufficient reason for absence. This should be by telephone: 01494 683992 or email: firstname.lastname@example.org.
- Ensure the school has up to date addresses and telephone numbers. We will contact you by text or by telephone if your son/daughter is absent and you have not contacted the school. This ensures that truancy is quickly identified and students are safe.
- If your son/daughter is ill, contact the school on the day of absence and provide an explanatory note on their return to school. Please make sure you telephone school every day your son/daughter is absent.
- If you wish to check that your son/daughter has arrived at school, please contact the school office and they will inform you if your son/daughter has been registered.
- If no contact is received regarding the absence, it is recorded as unauthorised. Ultimately the school is responsible for deciding if the absence is acceptable or not. Only genuine absence will be authorised. You will be asked to provide medical certificates if your son/daughter has a poor attendance record.
- Ensure that medical appointments are made outside of school time.
- Avoidable absence such as ‘buying new shoes’ would not be accepted as a reasonable absence.
- Holidays should not be taken in school time. Holidays will not be authorised during term time.
- Respond to school letters or telephone calls regarding attendance and punctuality.
- Contact your son/daughter’s mentor if you are experiencing difficulty in getting your son/daughter into school.
School begins at 8.35am and students are expected to be in school by 8.30am. All parents have a legal responsibility to ensure their child attends school on a punctual basis.
Students can only enter school near to the front of Reception.
Our Attendance Officer will be present at this gate monitoring students who are late between 08:35 - 08:55. The students then enter Reception, signing in using the system there and receive a print out to show to staff.
If a student is late to first lesson and thereafter, students will need to sign into Reception, print out their ticket and go to lessons.
If there has been a traffic incident or school buses are late, students will not be issued with late minutes.
If a student is late due to a medical or dental appointment, parents will need to inform the school in advance either by telephone, email or letter.
The Attendance Officer monitors attendance each week and various interventions take place as relevant for each student.
