English at Key Stage 3

Years 7, 8 and 9 follow schemes of work designed to give students a taste of all kinds of English literature, texts from other cultures and from different times. The aim of Year 9, in particular, is to ensure that students are ready to embark on their GCSE courses and they will actually commence their GCSE English Language and English Literature course during that academic year.  They will begin with the study of Shakespeare’s ‘Romeo and Juliet’ after the Easter holidays.

Students work towards GCSE targets on the new GCSE 9-1 grade scale, based on better than expected progress. They are tracked via Writing and Reading criteria and will produce several 9-1 assessed pieces of work each term.

A selection of texts/topics studied at KS3 are as follows: Romeo & Juliet, Shakespearean extracts, Poetry from other cultures, Animal Farm, Journey’s End and The Hound of the Baskervilles.
