Responsive Reading
The rationale
•The aim is to develop a consistent and systematic approach to reading across the curriculum in order to improve students’ literacy. Students in all subjects will be given rigorous and appropriately pitched texts for students to read across the curriculum.
•In practice this means that, in all three core subjects, teachers will spend 10-15 minutes per week on a reading tasks relevant to the scheme of work. These subjects select academic reading materials linked to their curriculum and built into schemes of work.
•Non- core subjects will do the same once every two weeks.
A Toolkit for Responsive Reading
•Skimming a text - for the general gist of a piece of writing •Scanning a text - when you want to find a specific piece of information in the text •Read aloud – not only engages but also addresses fluency of readers •Identify and address unfamiliar spellings, common errors/misconceptions
Other ideas might include:
•Summarise a text – do students know how to do this? •Find technical terms and define them •Identify phrases to use in their writing – ‘reading as a writer’ – e.g. “In contrast”
